Created by Mozart and Da Ponte in 1786, *The Marriage of Figaro* harnessed the spirit of the enlightenment to challenge established notions of gender, authority and theatrical form and has since become one of the enduring masterpieces of the operatic repertoire. Director Markus Bothe uses his background in musical drama to create a new stage version of Figaro for the theatre which delves deeper into the political and psychological dimensions of the material and explores the parallels between the age of Rococo and our own times.
